We got there eventually! (Going Places)
After one days rest since shooting Maya (which I was at work) I jumped straight into shooting Going Places. GP was great for me as I didn't want to only 1st AD this year, so when director Milo told me he was after a sound recordist I jumped at the opportunity. Unfortunately, day 1 had a bit of rocky start. The kit I'd been given was useless. I'd been given a little zoom recorder and no batteries. The sound was terrible and my assistant Laurence, a very capable sound recordist by himself, was going to miss 4 out of 6 shoot days. However, on this shoot I was working with my mini core team of James G, James D and Hazel, which I went on to work with for all four of my films.
Thankfully, the rest of the shoot days went much smoothly. After day one I was reunited with my precious mix pre 3 and vest and the sound improved exponentially. This was definitely one of the most audacious and impressive shoots that we've ever done. I went from shooting around the Sussex uni campus on day 1, to shooting in and around (a sometimes moving) Mustang, to recording a real jazz band. It was truly a bonkers shoot.
I got to work with some new people, which is always a good thing. Cameron, Mark, Milo were all great to work with. Mark was the AD on the shoot, watching him was really interesting. From watching Mark I learned that the most important job of the AD is to make sure all the crew are happy, because have crews as good as these ones allows for us to compromise and adapt.
I've added some photos to my facebook page, check them out if you want!
